NVMe SSDs in Storage Spaces Direct in Windows Server 2016 Failover Cluster

Compared with SSDs with SAS/SATA interfaces, PCIe-based NVM Express (NVMe) SSDs perform better as a local storage for windows 10 based workstation or in Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) in Windows Server 2016. It achieves superior results due to the elimination of SCSI translation which reduces latency significantly by delivering NVMe end to end.

S2D, introduced in Windows Server Technical Preview 2, enables building highly available (HA) storage systems with local storage. It simplifies the deployment and management of software-defined storage (SDS) systems and unlocks use of new classes of disks, such as NVMe/SATA disks, that were previously unavailable to clustered Storage Spaces with shared disks.
S2D uses disks that are exclusively connected to one node of a Windows Server 2016 failover cluster and allows Storage Spaces to create pools using those disks.
A NVMe Fabrics failover and recovery storage solution can offer storage to hosts via FC, iSCSI, SMB 3, NFS, FCoE, etc.
