NVMe SSDs in Storage Spaces Direct in Windows Server 2016 Failover Cluster

Compared with SSDs with SAS/SATA interfaces, PCIe-based NVM Express (NVMe) SSDs perform better as a local storage for windows 10 based workstation or in Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) in Windows Server 2016. It achieves superior results due to the elimination of SCSI translation which reduces latency significantly by delivering NVMe end to end.

S2D, introduced in Windows Server Technical Preview 2, enables building highly available (HA) storage systems with local storage. It simplifies the deployment and management of software-defined storage (SDS) systems and unlocks use of new classes of disks, such as NVMe/SATA disks, that were previously unavailable to clustered Storage Spaces with shared disks.
S2D uses disks that are exclusively connected to one node of a Windows Server 2016 failover cluster and allows Storage Spaces to create pools using those disks.

Data Care Clinic received several phone calls from 3 big data recovery service providers after discussions at the meeting. Their companies provide backup & replication for virtual environments to provide fast backup and Instant VM Recovery, Instant File-Level Recovery, built-in data de-duplication whether on VMware or Hyper-V. Synchronous replication between servers for disaster recovery, as well as stretching of a failover cluster for high availability enables mirroring of data in physical sites ensuring zero data loss at the file system level.  Asynchronous replication allows site extension with the possibility of data loss. They have interest in working together to deal with failing storage devices and corrupted snapshots.

In 2007, we had several cases either cannot mount snapshot and vmkfstools have limited capability to deal with messed up vmdk files or there is no access via ssh (putty) or management console. We cannot fire up VPS so we cannot change boot loader. We need to mount the snapshot so that we can start up the hosted vps remotely. The support people at both host provider and VMWare told us that we were out of luck.

After we found a way to trick VMWARE so that all the snapshots can be committed, we can continue the process of fixing up our messed up file system or deal with some disk issues.  When the OS is not bootable and we don’t have a fresh backup. Instead of make a backup, we targeted files we haven’t backed up yet first.
